Negli anni ’40 scrive famosi standard come “Epistrophy” e “Round Midnight” ed è considerato un genio dai colleghi musicisti. Il suo talento viene riconosciuto universalmente solo nel 1956, con la realizzazione dell’album “Brilliant Corners”, con moderne interpretazioni dei successi di Duke Ellington. Nel ’64 finisce sulla copertina del Time. Prima della morte (’82), collabora tra gli altri con Dizzie Gillespie, Charlie Parker e John Coltrane.
